In a significant move to advance its digital infrastructure, Thailand has greenlit four major data center initiatives totaling $3.1 billion as of Monday. This decision forms part of a larger strategy to draw both global and domestic tech investments.
Among the highlighted projects, DAMAC Digital from Dubai will invest in an 84-megawatt (MW) facility, costing approximately 26.7 billion baht. Additionally, a local investor plans to build a hyperscale data center, boasting a remarkable 200 MW IT load, with an estimated outlay of 54.9 billion baht. These initiatives are set to greatly enhance the nation's digital capabilities while generating high-value employment opportunities.
Furthermore, the Board of Investment (BOI) has launched new measures to hasten previously stalled projects valued at $9.2 billion. Investors can now enjoy expedited access to industrial land, a consistent power supply, and streamlined processes for visa and work permits. This initiative is aimed at reducing bureaucratic hurdles and fostering investor confidence.
Through these efforts, Thailand aspires to solidify its role as a regional leader in data storage, cloud computing, and digital services. Experts suggest that improved infrastructure and rapid project approvals will likely attract more multinational tech firms to set up operations within the country.
