Southern Thailand is reeling from catastrophic flooding as relentless rainfall has caused water levels to surge up to two meters in various locations, impacting nine provinces and tragically leading to at least 13 fatalities. This crisis is part of a broader monsoon disaster that has also affected neighboring Malaysia, where eight states are combating severe water damage.
In light of the calamity, Thailand's military has assumed control over the rescue and relief efforts. On Tuesday, a C-130 cargo aircraft was dispatched, loaded with essential supplies such as food, medicine, and water. The navy has also prepared a fleet of 14 boats alongside the aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet, which doubles as a floating hospital, as well as two helicopters, medical professionals, and field kitchens that can serve up to 3,000 meals each day.
Hat Yai, a vital commercial hub known for its rubber trade, has faced particularly severe impacts. The city experienced an astonishing 335 millimeters (approximately 13 inches) of rainfall in a single day—the highest recorded in 300 years. Evacuation initiatives in Hat Yai have utilized boats, high-clearance trucks, and jet skis to assist residents in fleeing the rising waters.
Provincial governor Ratthasart Chidchod has urged residents to evacuate immediately as conditions continue to deteriorate, jeopardizing the delivery of food and medical assistance. Dramatic footage broadcasted on television showcased streets inundated with murky waters, abandoned vehicles, and residents seeking refuge on floating boxes and rubber boats.
The Matchima Rescue Center in Hat Yai has reported thousands of calls for evacuations and food assistance in the recent days. Many individuals trapped by the floods have turned to social media to urgently request help, detailing their challenging situations and critical lack of basic necessities.
Overall, around 2.1 million individuals across Thailand have been affected by the floods, with an estimated 13,000 relocated to shelters; however, many remain isolated and unable to access assistance.
In Malaysia, more than 19,000 people have been evacuated to 126 centers, particularly in areas near the northern border. Rescue personnel are actively engaged in flooded homes, especially in the state of Perlis, helping vulnerable populations like the elderly and children reach safety. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim extended his prayers and urged the public to heed evacuation directives for their safety.
The floods are also inflicting damage on Thailand's economy, with the central bank reporting that 70% of branches in the hardest-hit provinces have been shut down. Industrial production has suffered, with 17 power plants ceasing operations and numerous factories in Songkhla province facing inundation, resulting in estimated losses of 1.28 billion baht (roughly $39.6 million). Continuing supply chain disruptions have further hindered factory operations.
This flood crisis has brought considerable distress to many residents who remain stranded. Rescue teams and volunteers persist in their efforts to deliver assistance and evacuate individuals in peril as the situation continues to develop.
This natural calamity underscores the difficulties posed by seasonal monsoon rains in the region and the need for well-coordinated emergency responses to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
