Tesla Sets Ambitious Plans for EV Growth in India

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Tesla is paving the way for India's transition to a sustainable, electric future with a comprehensive plan to expand its operations nationwide. Having officially launched in India earlier this year, the company now stands as its 50th global market, intent on creating a strong framework for electric vehicles (EVs).

The firm is committed to making EVs more accessible. Plans are underway to set up a series of charging stations in all major urban centers, strategically placed near shopping malls, hotels, offices, and lifestyle areas. Sharad Agarwal, Tesla’s General Manager in India, stated that this infrastructure will align with their customers’ lifestyles, making the transition to EV ownership simple and effective.

Following the introduction of two imported Model Y variants, Tesla is focusing on home charging solutions, destination chargers at essential locations, and supercharger installations in urban areas. Deliveries commenced in September 2025, with 109 units already sold. Due to high import duties nearing 70%, the Model Y is priced at ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh, making it approximately 30% more expensive compared to the U.S. market.

Tesla's presence in India is steadily growing. The first experience center in Mumbai opened in July, followed by another in Delhi in August. A new facility in Gurugram will add to the network, bringing the total to four charging stations across the country, which includes 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers.

Currently, local production isn’t on the agenda. Tesla is focusing on imported vehicles and service infrastructure while raising awareness about EV benefits. This approach aligns with India’s environmental objectives, as major cities like Delhi and Mumbai battle severe pollution issues. The adoption of EVs is viewed as vital for reducing emissions and enhancing urban air quality.

Tesla’s strategic expansion is a thoughtful mix of entering the market, developing infrastructure, and innovating with a lifestyle-oriented focus. By providing convenient charging solutions and offering premium EV options, the company aims to drive sustainable urban mobility in India.
