Temba Bavuma Achieves 1,000 Test Runs as South African Captain

In a remarkable achievement, Temba Bavuma, captain of South Africa, has surpassed 1,000 runs as a Test captain, becoming just the ninth skipper in history to do so. He is now the second-fastest South African to reach this milestone, trailing only the renowned Graeme Smith. Bavuma accomplished this during the second Test match against India in Guwahati.

During the first innings, Bavuma scored 41 runs from 92 balls, featuring five boundaries. He was eventually caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal off Ravindra Jadeja's spin during the third session. This performance pushed his total to exactly 1,010 runs from 20 innings across 12 Tests, where he boasts an impressive average of 56.11— the highest among all South African captains who have hit 1,000 or more runs in Test cricket.

Bavuma joins Dudley Nourse, who also reached the 1,000-run milestone in 20 innings. Only Graeme Smith can claim to have achieved this feat faster, in just 17 innings. Under Bavuma’s captaincy, he has scored three centuries and six fifties, with a top score of 172. His leadership has been vital in driving South Africa's success on the cricket field.

Graeme Smith still holds the title of South Africa’s most successful Test captain, having accumulated 8,647 runs in 108 Tests and 191 innings, including 25 centuries and 36 fifties, with a personal best of 277. In the Test match against India, South Africa opted to bat first and established a strong position. The opening pair, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, provided a solid start, scoring 38 and 35 runs, respectively, to forge an opening partnership of 82 runs. Markram hit five boundaries in his 81-ball innings, paralleling Rickelton’s effort of five fours in 82 balls.
