The first Ashes Test at Perth Stadium concluded dramatically as Australia triumphed over England by eight wickets within just two days. The match witnessed England's sudden downfall, leaving fans astonished.
Starting the second day confidently at 65 for 1, England held a promising lead of 105 runs. However, Australian pacers Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc swiftly altered the dynamics, taking ten wickets between them and unraveling England’s batting lineup swiftly. Boland ignited a significant collapse, capturing wickets in quick succession, resulting in England plummeting to 4-11 in a mere 19 balls. Starc followed suit, dismissing Joe Root and Ben Stokes, adding to England's struggles.
To secure a target of 205, Australia’s makeshift opener Travis Head delivered a sensational performance, amassing 123 runs off just 83 balls. His explosive innings propelled Australia to achieve the target in only 28.2 overs, scoring at an impressive rate of over seven runs per over. Head’s milestone – the third fastest century ever by an Australian in Test history – electrified the crowd of 49,983. Marnus Labuschagne contributed an unbeaten 51, while Steven Smith finished the match with the winning run, igniting a wave of celebration.
Head, who stepped in to open after Usman Khawaja experienced back spasms during England's innings, showed remarkable resilience despite limited experience in that role, supporting debutant Jake Weatherald while boldly attacking England's bowlers. He capitalized on short balls and inconsistent bowling, especially from Ben Stokes, and struck boundaries that delighted Australian fans.
Despite starting strong on the second day, England soon fell victim to the pressure. Boland's precision dismantled the upper order while Starc exhibited relentless pace and swing. Lower-order contributions from Carse and Gus Atkinson, who built a 47-run partnership, couldn't stave off the inevitable defeat. On his Test debut, Brendan Doggett capped off England's innings with five wickets, compounding their misfortune.
Earlier, Australia resumed at 123 for 9 in their first innings, where Doggett and Nathan Lyon made small contributions to reduce the deficit. Even with pressure from England’s bowlers, Australia rallied with aggressive running and shrewd hitting. Starc's lethal combination of swing and pace proved pivotal, while Boland, bouncing back from a challenging first spell, wreaked havoc in the second innings.
With England's batting line-up collapsing under the Australian barrage, Head's audacious century and the collective fast-bowling prowess of Starc and Boland sealed a commanding and thrilling victory for Australia. This result bolsters Australia’s morale while placing substantial pressure on England in the ongoing Ashes series.
