Telugu actress and producer Lakshmi Manchu has bravely recounted a disturbing experience from her youth, detailing how she was inappropriately touched at 15 while navigating her school life. She described the incident as humiliating, a moment that left a significant impact on her impressionable youth.
In an open dialogue, Lakshmi spoke about her upbringing in a well-off family, often accompanied by a driver, bodyguard, and her mother. Yet, one day, while traveling alone on public transport to pick up her exam hall tickets, she faced the traumatic event.
“The violation I experienced… it's an unspeakably ugly feeling. At 15, I didn’t realize I was just a kid to them. Rather than confront the situation, I distanced myself. I later confided in my friends, only to discover that many had faced similar incidents. I wasn’t the only one targeted, as this happens to far too many,” Lakshmi reflected.
Lakshmi commented on the misconceptions surrounding individuals from affluent families regarding their silence on such matters. “People expect those from wealthy backgrounds to remain quiet when incidents occur. For instance, if there’s a theft, it’s not something I’d shout aloud about. It’s ingrained in me to be careful and stay discreet. But if something did go missing, I wouldn’t want to draw unnecessary attention,” she shared.
The actress expressed that the MeToo movement resonated deeply with her. She revealed that upon reading accounts shared by the Women’s Commission, she couldn’t help but “cry;” realizing that countless experiences detailed were ones she had endured in some manner.
Lakshmi’s acting career began with a minor role in the American series Las Vegas, followed by appearances in shows such as Desperate Housewives and Late Nights with My Lover. She has also starred in notable commercials for Toyota, AARP, and Chevrolet.
As the daughter of Telugu superstar Mohan Babu, Lakshmi has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including two Filmfare Awards South and two Nandi Awards. More recently, she has participated in the reality show The Traitors, further solidifying her footprint in the entertainment landscape.
Through her poignant insights, Lakshmi Manchu continues to shine a light on the widespread issue of harassment, showing that even individuals from privileged backgrounds are not exempt from such experiences, and stressing the crucial need to voice against such abuses.
