Sydney Sweeney's latest project, Christy, has not fared well at the box office, furthering concerns about her recent film endeavors. Released on November 7, the biopic about boxing champion Christy Martin has hit record lows, becoming one of the least successful wide-releases in Hollywood.
Directed by David Michôd, Christy was made available on 2,184 screens across North America, but it managed to pull in just $1.31 million during its opening weekend, averaging approximately $600 per screen over three days. This positions Christy among the bottom 10 worst box office openings for a wide release in the region, not counting re-releases. The film’s performance is particularly striking, considering that even many pandemic-era films outperformed it. Previously, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012) held the title for the worst opening, grossing only $444,000.
Internationally, the reception has also been lackluster, contributing around $39,000 to its earnings outside of North America. Overall, the film's total gross stands at a disappointing $1.35 million after three days, especially concerning given its reported production budget of over $15 million, indicating likely financial losses ahead.
Insight into Christy and Sweeney’s Portrayal
Christy depicts the life and challenges faced by Christy Martin, a groundbreaking female boxer recognized for her significant accomplishments and tragic storyline. To bring authenticity to her role, Sydney Sweeney underwent a notable physical transformation, gaining muscle mass suitable for the character. The film also features a talented ensemble cast, including Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.
Despite the cast's efforts, the film's disappointing box office performance suggests it didn't resonate with audiences or critics, affecting ticket sales significantly.
Continuing Box Office Struggles for Sydney Sweeney
With Christy marking her fourth successive box office failure, Sydney Sweeney’s recent projects have consistently struggled financially:
Eden (budget: $55 million) managed only $2.5 million.
Both Immaculate and Madame Web also did not break even, according to industry analytics.
This series of commercial setbacks calls into question Sweeney's current draw at the box office, even as she embraces challenging roles.
The Future for Sydney Sweeney
Despite these difficulties, Sydney Sweeney is set to appear in another project, The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, debuting on December 19. Observers are eager to see if this film can alter her financial trajectory.
Ultimately, Christy’s tepid debut underscores the hurdles that biopics and sports dramas face in today’s evolving box office landscape. While Sydney Sweeney's dedication to her character is evident, the film’s failure to attract a sizable audience suggests it will likely be remembered for its box office woes rather than its artistic value.
