Suspected Gunman in Brown and MIT Shootings Discovered Deceased in New Hampshire

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Late Thursday, officials confirmed that Claudio Neves Valente, a suspect in fatal shootings at Brown University in Rhode Island and an MIT professor, was found dead in a storage unit in New Hampshire, putting an end to a tense nationwide manhunt.

The 48-year-old Portuguese national was discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as reported by Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez. Authorities suspect Valente acted alone in the two attacks that left the communities in Providence and Boston unsettled.

This discovery terminated one of the most urgent manhunts in recent memory, engaging local law enforcement, federal agencies, and state officials across the New England region.

Brown University Shooting Claims Two Lives

The investigation started with a mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday that resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others injured. The incident occurred within a physics building on campus, an area restricted due to the sensitive equipment used in scholarly research.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Ella Cook from Alabama and first-year student MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan. Cook was the vice president of Brown’s College Republicans, while Umurzokov aimed to pursue neurosurgery. The loss of both students has stirred deep sorrow on campus, prompting vigils and commemorative gatherings.

University President Christina Paxson stated that Valente had briefly enrolled at Brown as a graduate physics student two decades ago, but he held no current affiliation with the university.

Second Murder Linked to MIT Professor

The investigation expanded on Monday when authorities connected the Brown shooting to the death of MIT physics professor Nuno F. G. Loureiro, who was found dead in his Boston-area home two days post the university shooting.

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley confirmed that evidence directly linked Valente to Loureiro’s murder. Investigators are also exploring prior ties between Valente and Loureiro from their time at a university in Lisbon.

Tip from the Public Leads to Breakthrough

The breakthrough in the investigation came after an individual recognized Valente from a photo shared by law enforcement and reached out with crucial information. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha highlighted the importance of this tip in pinpointing the suspect's whereabouts.

This lead helped police track the vehicle associated with Valente, and surveillance footage corroborated his connection to a rental car and matched the unique clothing and bag of the shooter at Brown. Investigators later uncovered that Valente attempted to mask his movements by altering license plates.

Valente Discovered in Storage Facility

Federal and state authorities descended upon a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire late Thursday, with witnesses describing heavily armed units entering the building. Hours later, they confirmed the discovery of Valente’s body inside a rented unit.

Investigators reportedly recovered two firearms and evidence consistent with items found at the scenes in Providence from both the storage unit and a nearby vehicle.

Community Responds with Relief and Concern

The heightened manhunt raised public anxiety, particularly after an individual initially described as a person of interest was released. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the confusion and fear caused by the situation while asserting that the investigation continued unimpeded.

Federal authorities faced criticism after early public statements suggested the case was closed with the initial arrest, only to face scrutiny when the person was released from custody.

Background Information on Valente

Neronha confirmed that Valente obtained lawful permanent resident status in the U.S. in September 2017. Details regarding the acquisition of the firearms utilized in the attacks remain unclear, along with inquiries into potential motives, personal relations, and any grievances tied to his academic history.

Brown University Community in Mourning

The Brown campus is engulfed in grief as students and faculty navigate the aftermath of the tragedy. Counseling services have been expanded, and the university has committed to supporting those affected while fully cooperating with ongoing investigations.

The attack struck deeply at a site synonymous with academic inquiry, making its violent nature particularly jarring. Many students expressed astonishment that such devastation occurred in a familiar campus setting.

Ongoing Investigation

While Valente’s death has alleviated immediate safety concerns, investigators emphasize that their work is far from complete. Authorities continue to explore Valente’s motives, trace the firearms used, and piece together a thorough timeline of his actions between the shooting at Brown and the murder of the MIT professor.

Law enforcement officials reiterated the significance of public cooperation in case resolutions, noting that citizen assistance remains essential in urgent investigations.
