Surgeon Sounds Alarm on Rising Metabolic Syndrome in India

Surgeon Sounds Alarm on Rising Metabolic Syndrome in India

Post by : Saif Nasser

A prominent bariatric and gastrointestinal surgeon from Gurugram has issued a serious warning regarding a growing health crisis in India. Dr. Anshuman Kaushal, who possesses over seventeen years of expertise, emphasized that the country is confronting not a single ailment, but a cluster of issues collectively known as metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome arises when the body fails to respond adequately to insulin. This ineffective response can lead to serious health complications as excess hormones flood the system, the liver becomes inflamed, and fat accumulation accelerates. Ultimately, this silent condition paves the way for fatty liver, elevated blood sugar, high cholesterol, and hypertension, all of which heighten the risk of heart attacks and other grave health concerns.

In a video shared on November 17, Dr. Kaushal elaborated on the alarming speed at which this health issue is proliferating in India, often affecting individuals who remain unaware of their condition. He highlighted five critical warning signs: an enlarged waist circumference, high blood sugar, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and high blood pressure. If three of these markers are present, the likelihood of metabolic syndrome is significantly increased.

He identified the condition as a “silent threat,” as it develops quietly without strong early symptoms. Many individuals mistakenly believe they are healthy until their condition deteriorates significantly. Medical professionals refer to it as a “gateway disease,” since once metabolic syndrome manifests, the likelihood of developing diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver increases markedly.

Dr. Kaushal further discussed the factors contributing to this rising epidemic in India. He noted that an increase in processed food consumption, sedentary lifestyles, stress, and inadequate sleep exacerbate insulin resistance. These elements collectively create what he termed a “metabolic traffic jam,” hindering bodily functions.

To empower individuals in assessing their own risk, Dr. Kaushal provided straightforward self-assessment criteria. Men with waists exceeding thirty-five inches and women surpassing thirty-one point two inches should be concerned. Other significant indicators include fasting blood sugar above one hundred milligrams per deciliter, triglyceride levels exceeding one hundred and fifty, low levels of good cholesterol, and consistently high blood pressure.

Health professionals assert that taking early action can prevent the situation from deteriorating. Adopting a balanced diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, ensuring adequate sleep, and regularly monitoring health metrics can significantly mitigate long-term health issues. Early detection can enable effective management of many cases, whereas neglecting symptoms complicates the situation further.

Metabolic syndrome stands out as one of the foremost public health threats for India in contemporary times. Experts argue that increased awareness and proactive lifestyle modifications can avert many severe diseases linked to this condition. Dr. Kaushal's message is clear: recognizing the warning signs today can safeguard health in the future.
