Raipur Cancer Surgeon Outlines Safety Profile of Popular Sugar Substitutes

Post by : Saif Nasser

With rising concern about the health impacts of excessive sugar — including weight gain, diabetes and a possible link to cancer — many consumers are switching to sugar alternatives. Dr Jayesh Sharma, a cancer surgeon based in Raipur, has set out clear, evidence‑based guidance on which sweeteners are generally acceptable and which require caution.

Dr Sharma said that common artificial sweeteners found in single‑serve packets and diet soft drinks are not proven carcinogens and can reduce calorie intake, offering a potential tool for weight control. However, he warned these products can disturb gut microbial balance, which in some people may increase appetite and lead to higher overall calorie consumption, undermining weight‑loss efforts.

Low‑calorie sugar substitutes used in sugar‑free confectionery — such as sucralose and erythritol — provide sweetness with few calories and have a limited effect on blood glucose, making them useful for people with diabetes. Nevertheless, these agents can cause digestive side effects like bloating and gas for some users, so Dr Sharma noted that occasional small amounts of regular sugar can be preferable to chronic reliance on these additives.

On natural options, he recommended plant‑derived sweeteners such as stevia and monk fruit. Both are calorie‑free and do not raise blood sugar levels. Stevia is versatile for cooking and is considered largely safe, while monk fruit appears promising although long‑term studies remain sparse.

Dr Sharma urged individuals to be guided by their own health needs and to use sweeteners in moderation. For those who enjoy sweet foods, alternating natural substitutes with modest portions of regular sugar can be a reasonable approach; he emphasized that maintaining balance is more sustainable than strict prohibition.
