Surgeon Jayant Patel Discusses Overturned Convictions in Australia

Post by : Raina Nasser

Jayant Patel, a surgeon of Indian descent, has spoken out for the first time since 2015 regarding his previous convictions in Australia. He reflected on the notorious Bundaberg hospital case from almost two decades back, stating that he now views those events as “ages ago” and has “completely forgotten” the distress and loss that accompanied his medical practice.

Patel, who is currently based in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 after being found guilty of criminal negligence in the deaths of three patients at a Queensland facility from 2003 to 2005. He was additionally convicted of harming a fourth patient due to allegations of surgical errors, misdiagnoses, and poor medical techniques.

However, in a significant turn of events, the apex court of Australia overturned his convictions in 2012, leading to the dropping of all remaining charges by 2013. Following these legal developments, Patel permanently moved to the United States.

In a recent brief interview, Patel seemed somewhat disconnected while recalling his past, stating, “That’s done, that’s history … I don’t react to foolish criticisms, I’ve moved on with my life. I’m fine.” He is said to lead a comfortable life in a spacious four-bedroom house with three garages and drives a luxury car. His wife, Kishoree Patel, is also a medical professional, and the couple enjoys a discreet lifestyle.

Patel’s remarks, despite the serious nature of the incidents in Australia, hint at his emotional distance from a controversial history. This has sparked renewed conversations around medical responsibility, legal processes, and patient safety in global healthcare practices.
