Liverpool continued to grapple with their Premier League woes, settling for a 1-1 tie against Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday. After a hopeful 2-0 victory against West Ham United, the Merseyside squad hoped to regain momentum, yet their display against Sunderland sparked fresh doubts about their current form.
In the 67th minute, Sunderland took the lead thanks to Chemsdine Talbi, who seized on a rare slip from Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk. The deflected shot left Alisson with no chance to react. For much of the encounter, Sunderland appeared dominant, in search of their first win at Anfield since 1983.
Liverpool managed to equalize late in the game in the 81st minute when new signing Florian Wirtz, after dodging two defenders, saw his shot deflect off teammate Nordi Mukiele and into the net. This goal became an own goal for Mukiele, frustrating Wirtz but saving Liverpool from a daunting defeat.
In a tense finish, Sunderland almost clinched victory as Wilson Isidor broke through the defense and evaded Alisson, only to have his shot brilliantly cleared off the line by Federico Chiesa. This intense ending reflected both Liverpool's defensive lapses and Sunderland’s fighting spirit in the second half.
Manager Arne Slot opted not to start star player Mohamed Salah for the second consecutive match due to recent form issues. Salah entered in the second half, injecting pace into the attack, but Liverpool struggled to assert themselves early, allowing Sunderland to take control.
Liverpool had multiple chances to win, including an early chance from Wirtz after a mishap by Sunderland’s Robin Roefs and a long-range shot from Dominik Szoboszlai that Roefs successfully deflected. A cross from Joe Gomez nearly led to a goal for Alexis Mac Allister as well, but his header went wide. Conversely, Sunderland posed threats too, with Trai Hume testing Alisson’s skills with a fierce shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.
Despite securing a late equalizer, Liverpool’s struggles persist. They have yet to win any Premier League matches after going behind since their victory over Tottenham Hotspur the prior April. Slot remarked on the misfortune of the deflected goal and the difficulty in breaking down a solid Sunderland lineup.
Sunderland's manager, Regis Le Bris, expressed pride in his team’s resilience and performance: “Playing at Anfield is special, and our players showed remarkable determination. We earned the point we fought for,” he stated.
Currently, Liverpool sits eighth in the Premier League with 22 points, trailing leaders Arsenal by 11 points, while Sunderland occupies sixth place with 23 points, buoyed by their impressive showing at Anfield.
This draw highlights Liverpool's ongoing difficulties this season as they strive to regain consistency and contend seriously for the Premier League title amidst player injuries and inconsistent performances.
