Political Unrest: Bangladesh Student Leader Shot Ahead of Elections

Post by : Raina Nasser

As elections approach, Bangladesh is witnessing an alarming rise in political violence. On Monday, an unidentified assailant shot a prominent student leader in the head in Khulna.

The victim, Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, holds a senior position within the National Citizen Party (NCP) and plays a pivotal role in its labor wing.

The incident took place around 11:45 am at a residence in Khulna's Sonadanga area. Reports suggest that Sikdar was attacked at close range while inside the house.

Sikdar sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his head and was immediately taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital for urgent medical care. He was later transferred to another facility for a CT scan to assess the extent of his injuries. His condition remains serious.

At the time of the assault, Sikdar was involved in organizing a labor rally for his party in Khulna. He serves as the divisional coordinator for the NCP’s labor section.

Local police confirmed the shooting and have launched an investigation to identify the assailants and determine the motive behind the attack.

This shooting adds to the existing climate of tension in Bangladesh, following violent protests triggered by the assassination of a radical political figure earlier this month. This incident has incited unrest in various cities.

With national elections scheduled for February 2026, political tensions continue to rise. Recent months have seen an uptick in violence, prompting fears among minority groups.

Experts caution that such violence illustrates the precarious state of safety in the country. There are growing concerns that incidents like this could increase as the election date nears.

Authorities have stated their commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order during elections. Meanwhile, the medical condition of the injured student leader remains under ongoing observation.
