Amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan, Afghanistan is making significant strides in enhancing its trade relationship with India. This initiative follows the visit of Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi, Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, to New Delhi on November 19 for a crucial five-day official visit.
Important Diplomatic Engagements
Upon arrival, Minister Azizi was greeted by Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, underscoring India’s commitment to fostering high-level engagements with Afghanistan—as one of the most noteworthy since 2021.
Trade Focused Initiatives
His primary agenda included participation in the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025, where he led a substantial Afghan delegation aimed at exploring new economic opportunities. Indian officials provided insights into investment prospects, trade facilities, and potential improvements for Afghanistan's participation in future trade exhibitions.
The Afghan delegation also explored numerous stalls featuring key exports such as carpets, gemstones, and dry fruits. Minister Azizi engaged with Afghan entrepreneurs in India to address obstacles in trade and strategies for increasing exports.
This marks the first attendance by an Afghan minister at the fair since 2021, signifying a thaw in diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and India.
Contextual Challenges With Pakistan
The growing inclination towards India is prompted by issues with Pakistan, including border closures and trade restrictions that have hampered Afghanistan's access to international markets. The ongoing border shutdowns have severely impacted Afghan exporters, leading Kabul to seek more stable alternatives.
A senior Indian official revealed plans to enhance the India-Afghanistan air corridor further. Currently, two cargo flights operate daily between both nations, with a logistics firm in India set to bolster freight capacity.
Afghanistan previously sought to revitalize shipping routes via Iran’s Chabahar Port, but sanctions have complicated those efforts, prompting a stronger focus on aerial trade connections.
Rapid Expansion of Trade Partnerships
India remains a vital trading partner for Afghanistan, supplying rice, sugar, textiles, machinery, and more. Conversely, Afghanistan exports essential agricultural products and minerals to India.
Kabul is actively pursuing Indian investments in mining and hydroelectric projects to enhance its domestic economy. Notably, India is upgrading its embassy in Kabul to full operations by October 2025, marking this visit as a pivotal moment in revitalizing bilateral relations.
Strategic Regional Implications
This strategic pivot also conveys a clear political statement: Afghanistan seeks diversified trade outlets rather than relying solely on Pakistan. The growing collaboration, operational air corridor, and expanding diplomatic ties indicate a promising trade partnership in the coming years.
