Vietnam anticipates a significant diplomatic advancement as General Secretary and President To Lam embarks on an official trip to Thailand. Officials in Vietnam expect this visit to fortify political trust, economic collaboration, and regional connectivity between the two neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong remarked that over the last fifty years, the connection between Vietnam and Thailand has matured into one of the most vibrant and successful partnerships within ASEAN. He emphasized that both nations share mutual goals in fostering regional peace, economic progress, and enduring stability.
A pivotal moment in their bilateral ties occurred in 2025 when both nations elevated their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This progression underscores a significant level of political trust and a joint commitment towards broadening cooperation across various sectors such as trade, security, tourism, and infrastructure.
Economic collaboration remains a cornerstone of this partnership, with Thailand recognized as Vietnam's largest trading counterpart within ASEAN. It is anticipated that bilateral trade will exceed 22 billion USD by 2025. Thai enterprises have made substantial investments in Vietnam, focusing on energy, logistics, retail, processing industries, and infrastructure initiatives.
Vietnamese officials have also pointed out the increasing relevance of supply chain collaboration, transport connectivity, and development in the Mekong region. These countries are positioned to become leading economic and logistics hubs in mainland Southeast Asia as regional trade and investment flourish.
The cooperation in security and defense has also deepened recently, with authorities from both nations collaborating closely on challenges such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other transnational security concerns affecting the region.
This visit is anticipated to unlock new potential in emerging sectors like digital transformation, renewable energy, green economy, innovation, and industrial modernization. Leaders are expected to address enhancing ASEAN cooperation and advancing regional connectivity initiatives.
Cultural interactions and exchanges between the peoples remain vital aspects of this partnership, with a sizable Vietnamese community and numerous Ho Chi Minh memorial sites in Thailand signifying the historical ties. Officials express optimism that increased tourism and educational exchanges will further elevate bilateral relations.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong emphasized that this forthcoming visit exemplifies Vietnam’s strong dedication to ASEAN cooperation and the shared ambition of both nations to elevate their partnership in the years ahead.
