Travel Ban Imposed on Former Sri Lankan President in Easter Attack Investigation

Post by : Shakul

In a significant development, the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in Sri Lanka has enacted a travel ban on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, along with two ex-military officers, in light of the ongoing investigation into the tragic Easter Sunday bombings of 2019.

This ruling came on Wednesday following a plea from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is conducting a thorough examination of the devastating terrorist attacks.

The bombings, which took place on April 21, 2019, targeted both churches and high-end hotels throughout the nation, resulting in 270 fatalities, including 11 Indian nationals, marking one of the deadliest events in Sri Lankan history.

Court representatives confirmed that the decision restricts Rajapaksa and the two former military leaders from leaving the country until the investigation is concluded.

The CID contended that these travel restrictions are essential to secure ongoing cooperation and to avert any potential interference with the investigation.

The court agreed with this reasoning, mandating the travel prohibition to remain effective until further rulings reflect the investigation's progress.

Rajapaksa, who held the presidency at the time of the attacks, has faced criticism over lapses in security and intelligence failures related to the incidents.

The inquiry into the Easter Sunday bombings has proven to be both politically sensitive and legally intricate, involving numerous agencies and notable figures.

Authorities are currently analyzing pertinent intelligence reports, security maneuvers, and administrative responses that occurred before the coordinated assaults across the island.

As the investigation continues, the case is expected to remain under judicial scrutiny as Sri Lanka strives for accountability and understanding surrounding this tragic series of attacks.
