Have you observed tiny shapes, threads or dark specks drifting across your field of vision? Clinically known as “floaters,” these phenomena are common. In most cases they are benign, but occasionally they point to an eye condition requiring prompt assessment.
Eye specialists emphasise that recognising the source of these visual disturbances can protect sight. Ophthalmologist Dr. Meera Sood notes, “Floaters consist of small aggregates of cells or vitreous gel within the eye. They produce shadows on the retina, creating the perception of spots or lines. When they develop gradually and do not impair vision, they are usually not dangerous.”
Common causes of spots in vision
Several factors can produce these visual spots:
Age-related changes: Over time the vitreous gel can liquefy and contract, forming strands or clumps that cast shadows on the retina. This age-related process is common and typically harmless.
Eye strain or fatigue: Prolonged screen use, reading in dim light, or general tiredness can heighten awareness of floaters, making them seem more prominent.
Injury or trauma: Blunt force to the eye may trigger new floaters or brief flashes of light; such symptoms warrant rapid medical evaluation.
Underlying eye disease: Conditions such as retinal tears or detachment, and intraocular haemorrhage, can present with a sudden onset of floaters or flashes. These are ocular emergencies that require immediate care to avoid permanent vision loss.
Systemic health issues: Medical disorders including diabetes and hypertension can affect retinal health and lead to visual disturbances. Routine examinations can identify these risks early.
When to see a doctor
Although most floaters are benign, certain red flags should prompt urgent ophthalmic assessment:
A rapid surge in the number of floaters
New flashes or streaks of light
A shadow or a curtain-like loss entering peripheral vision
Persistent loss of sight or sustained blurred patches
Dr. Sood recommends, “If you experience any of these signs, consult an ophthalmologist without delay. Timely diagnosis and treatment can avert significant and potentially irreversible vision damage.”
How to care for your eyes
Practical daily measures can support eye health:
Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screens: every 20 minutes look at an object about 20 feet away for 20 seconds
Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors to shield your eyes from harmful rays
Maintain a balanced diet with vitamins A, C and E to support ocular health
Keep well hydrated and ensure adequate sleep to lower eye strain
Attend periodic eye examinations so issues can be detected early
While floaters and spots may cause concern, identifying their origin guides an appropriate response. Often they reflect normal age-related changes; yet sudden onset or accompanying warning signs necessitate immediate evaluation.
Eyes are fragile; monitoring visual changes and maintaining routine care, a nutritious lifestyle and prompt medical review when needed are key to preserving long-term vision.
