In a bid to manage expenses during its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Spirit Airlines has announced tentative agreements with the unions representing its pilots and flight attendants. This development was confirmed by the low-cost airline on Friday, highlighting that the new contracts will involve specific concessions aimed at alleviating financial strain.
Furthermore, Spirit indicated that its senior management will implement pay cuts matching or surpassing those of the pilot group, effective once the agreements receive ratification. This initiative reflects Spirit’s overarching strategy to distribute the financial burden while aiming for recovery.
Earlier this year, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time, attributing this decision to dwindling cash reserves and increasing operational losses. Since then, the airline has initiated a rigorous restructuring program, which has included route reductions, employee layoffs, and operational cutbacks to restore financial health.
Moreover, just this week Spirit revealed the elimination of approximately 150 salaried positions and the discontinuation of services at five airports, including Milwaukee and Phoenix.
As per the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents Spirit's pilots, both parties have come to an Agreement-in-Principle that modifies the existing labor contract. These agreements still await ratification from union members and approval from the court but are anticipated to offer annual savings that align with financial requirements for the airline’s upcoming debtor-in-possession financing round.
Although challenges persist, Spirit’s latest efforts in cost reduction and collaboration with its workforce signify a crucial step toward emerging from bankruptcy as a more streamlined and financially robust airline.
