The Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has partnered with Sphere Entertainment Co. to establish Sphere Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, a groundbreaking entertainment venue with a budget of US$1.7 billion.
This venture marks the first Sphere location outside the U.S. and is projected to become a prominent attraction globally. The site will be strategically positioned between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, enveloped by green areas and proximal to key Yas Island sites. The construction is set to be completed by late 2029.
Officials emphasized that this initiative will enhance tourism, aid economic diversification, and position Abu Dhabi as a leader in global entertainment.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, highlighted that the project aligns with the emirate’s strategic vision and showcases its commitment to international collaborations. He mentioned that Sphere Abu Dhabi will serve as a platform for Emirati culture and storytelling on an international level.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, noted that Abu Dhabi’s ambitions and infrastructure render it an exceptional venue for global Sphere expansion. He also anticipated that Yas Island would emerge as a primary destination for immersive entertainment.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will feature three main event formats: immersive Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and adaptable events, such as sports and conferences. The venue is set to employ cutting-edge immersive technology, highlighted by its spectacular exterior LED display, the Exosphere.
With a potential capacity to accommodate up to 20,000 attendees, depending on the event type, the venue is expected to generate thousands of jobs once operational.
Plans also include showcasing Emirati artists and culture alongside international acts. Sphere Abu Dhabi aims to offer immersive experiences akin to those found in Sphere Las Vegas, inaugurated in 2023.
Proximity to Zayed International Airport will afford Sphere Abu Dhabi excellent transport links and easy access to tourism infrastructure. The project will bolster Yas Island’s status as a premier entertainment hub, alongside other significant initiatives like the Saadiyat Cultural District and the forthcoming Disney theme park resort.
Leading authorities, including Abu Dhabi Mobility, Department of Municipalities and Transport, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar, will collaborate on the transportation and infrastructure planning required to support this venture and its surrounding developments.
