Iga Swiatek showcased her formidable skills as she crushed American fifth seed Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-1, 6-2, advancing to the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.
The Polish fourth seed and six-time Grand Slam champion dominated right from the outset, racing to a commanding 5-0 lead before Pegula managed to score a game, preventing a total first-set shutout. Swiatek retained control throughout the match, conceding only three games.
The second set unfolded similarly, as Swiatek maintained aggressive pressure from the baseline, concluding the match without difficulty. Her performance was highlighted by 15 winners compared to Pegula's six, underscoring her control in all facets of play.
This match marks Swiatek's first win against a top-10 opponent this year, signaling a positive shift following her recent collaboration with former Rafael Nadal coach Francisco Roig.
After the match, Swiatek expressed satisfaction with her execution under pressure, mentioning that she felt confident and in command from the start.
This victory is a crucial step for Swiatek as she gears up for the French Open starting May 24. She aims to secure her fifth title at Roland Garros to further bolster her impressive clay-court record.
With world number one Aryna Sabalenka’s unexpected exit at the hands of Sorana Cirstea, Swiatek’s path to clinching her first clay-court title since her 2024 French Open triumph appears more straightforward.
In the semi-finals, Swiatek will face either Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina.
