Sonali Bendre Stands by Naturopathy Claims Amid Criticism from Medical Experts

Post by : Saif Nasser

Sonali Bendre has issued a response following backlash from healthcare professionals after discussing her experience with naturopathy and autophagy during her cancer treatment. The Bollywood star, who faced stage 4 metastatic cancer, emphasized that she never positioned herself as a medical expert, sharing her story from a personal standpoint. She urged individuals not to dismiss her journey, stressing that every patient has the autonomy to decide what they find empowering.

The debate ignited when Sonali posted on social media about how autophagy played a role in her recovery from cancer. She mentioned her naturopath introduced her to the concept, which she diligently researched and embraced, noting its positive impact on her life. Several doctors reacted strongly to her claims, cautioning that such messages could mislead cancer patients into believing alternative therapies could replace established medical treatments.

Sonali articulated that she has encountered the fear, pain, uncertainty, and rebuilding that accompany a cancer battle, wanting only to share her insights with sincerity and humility. She clarified that she has never urged others to follow her path or claimed that her methods are universally effective. According to Sonali, cancer experiences are uniquely personal, with no one-size-fits-all treatment approach. She asserted that autophagy was beneficial for her and continues to play a role in her wellness journey.

Medical professionals acknowledged that while Sonali’s narrative is valid, her post might inadvertently promote the idea that naturopathy holds equivalent weight to scientifically validated treatments. Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known as 'The Liver Doc,' remarked that Sonali is not a fraud but rather a victim of unverified and misleading assertions often made in naturopathy. He urged medical peers to refrain from personal attacks on Sonali, redirecting focus instead to providing public guidance backed by scientific evidence.

Dr. Philips reiterated that health and treatment conclusions should stem from research, rather than personal testimonies, no matter how uplifting. Other medical practitioners cautioned that well-known figures must tread carefully, as followers may mimic their paths without understanding the full scope of risks involved.

In her original post, Sonali recounted discovering autophagy in 2018, shortly after her cancer diagnosis. She discussed the research she conducted, the consultations with her naturopath, and how it played a role in her treatment regime. Doctors quickly countered online, pointing out that her post overlooked the fact she also underwent conventional cancer treatment at a premier facility. They expressed concern over the potential misinterpretation that alternative therapies were primarily responsible for her recovery.

Sonali Bendre was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer back in 2018 and received treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the United States. By 2019, she was declared cancer-free, becoming a beacon of hope for many amid serious health challenges. Her recent remarks have sparked broader discussions on the intersection of personal experience and medical evidence, particularly when articulated by public personalities.

As opinions diverge, this issue highlights the sensitivity surrounding dialogues about medical treatment. Sonali insists that her intent is to share her experiences rather than propose remedies. Meanwhile, doctors underscore the necessity of scientific data to inform public health actions. Both perspectives converge on the belief that cancer patients should remain informed, receive adequate support, and make choices that prioritize their safety.
