Six Essential Habits to Reduce Heart Disease Risk for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

Post by : Saif Nasser

Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes face an elevated risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of mortality among adults globally. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported nearly 702,880 deaths due to heart disease in the United States in 2022. Specialists state that adhering to specific healthy practices can dramatically lower the likelihood of heart complications for diabetes sufferers.

Consuming excessive salt, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats heightens heart disease risks. Cardiologist Raj Patcha advises opting for lower-sodium snack options, whole-grain bread, brown rice, and frozen or canned vegetables if fresh goods are inaccessible. Incorporating foods abundant in healthy fats, like avocados, fish, nut butters, and tofu, is vital for a heart-focused diet.

Excess body weight poses additional strain on the heart. It is recommended that adults engage in a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week, such as brisk walking, or partake in 75 minutes of vigorous activities like running. Engaging in enjoyable activities like dancing or evening strolls can be beneficial. Balancing exercise with a nutritious diet is essential for maintaining weight and promoting heart wellness.

Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, a board-certified cardiologist, emphasizes the need for consistent monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and overall body weight for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Regular health check-ups are crucial for the early identification of potential heart issues, facilitating timely interventions.

Dr. Patcha underscores the necessity of establishing a dependable relationship with a healthcare provider. Disregarding medical guidance or being uncomfortable with your physician may result in overlooked health issues, increasing the risk of severe complications, including heart attacks, strokes, or vision impairment at a younger age. Don't hesitate to seek a new doctor if adequate care is lacking.

Several lifestyle elements, such as smoking, high stress, a sedentary lifestyle, inadequate sleep, and excessive alcohol intake, can heighten heart disease vulnerability. Consulting your physician about these factors can assist in taking actionable steps toward risk reduction.

Stress can elevate blood pressure and instigate systemic inflammation, jeopardizing heart health. Dr. Chen recommends stress-relief practices like yoga, meditation, and routine physical activity. Even methods as straightforward as deep breathing exercises or short walks daily can significantly improve well-being.

By integrating these six healthy habits into their daily routines, individuals with type 2 diabetes can safeguard their heart health, enhance overall wellness, and decrease the potential for severe complications. Ongoing awareness and proactive lifestyle modifications are essential for maintaining a healthier, balanced life with diabetes.
