Vascular surgeon shares 2-minute desk exercise to protect your legs from long sitting

Post by : Saif Nasser

Long hours of sitting at work can silently harm your vascular health. Desk jobs, back-to-back meetings, and tight deadlines often keep people glued to their chairs for hours without moving. This prolonged sitting can slow down blood flow in the legs, causing heaviness, swelling, fatigue, and even increasing the risk of serious conditions like varicose veins or blood clots. While taking short walks every hour is ideal, experts say that a simple seated exercise can help maintain healthy circulation and protect your legs.

Dr Sumit Kapadia, a vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist with 18 years of experience, recently shared a simple but effective exercise on Instagram that can be done even at your desk. In his video posted on November 29, Dr Kapadia explained that performing ankle pumps for just a few minutes every hour can help prevent vascular damage caused by long periods of sitting.

Prolonged sitting affects the vascular system because it reduces the movement of blood in the legs. “Sitting for too long slows down the blood flow in your legs, and that’s when problems begin,” Dr Kapadia explained. Over time, this can lead to complications such as leg heaviness, swelling, varicose veins, poor circulation, and in severe cases, an increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a type of blood clot that can be dangerous if untreated.

The ankle pump exercise is simple. Dr Kapadia advises people to move their ankles up and down 20 to 30 times every hour. This small movement activates the calf muscles, often called the “peripheral heart,” which helps push blood back toward the heart. The entire exercise takes just about 30 seconds, yet it has a significant impact on circulation and leg health.

Regularly performing ankle pumps can offer multiple benefits. It improves blood flow in the legs, reduces swelling, lowers the risk of blood clots, and prevents fatigue at the end of the day. Even if you cannot step away from your desk for a short walk, this tiny daily exercise ensures that your legs stay healthier and more comfortable.

Dr Kapadia emphasizes that ankle pumps are not a replacement for moving around entirely, but they are a practical alternative for busy schedules. Incorporating this simple exercise into your workday can greatly reduce the harmful effects of prolonged sitting and support long-term vascular health.
