Sikh Pilgrim Disappears During Journey to Pakistan for Religious Observances

Post by : Raina Nasser

In an alarming incident, Sarabjit Kaur, an Indian Sikh woman, has gone missing while participating in a religious pilgrimage to Pakistan, stirring fears regarding the safety of travelers abroad. Hailing from Kapurthala district in Punjab, Kaur was among 1,923 Sikh pilgrims who embarked on this journey as part of a bilateral agreement aimed at facilitating visits to significant religious sites.

The pilgrimage commenced on November 4 via the Attari border in Amritsar, with the group journeying to Nankana Sahib to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Parkash Parv. Guided by Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj of Akal Takht Sahib, the group visited numerous key gurudwaras over a span of ten days.

Upon the rest of the group's return to India on Thursday evening, concerns grew as Sarabjit Kaur’s name was absent from immigration logs in both nations. She was not recorded in the exit documentation from Pakistan nor in the records for re-entry into India.

Efforts to locate her are underway, with authorities from both nations coordinating in the search. The Indian mission in Pakistan is reportedly liaising with local officials to expedite the ongoing investigation and ensure Kaur’s safety.

This case arises shortly after the Indian Union government allowed Sikh pilgrims to undertake this 10-day journey to Nankana Sahib, following a recent denial due to potential security issues. Each year, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) arranges pilgrimages to historic Sikh sites in Pakistan, particularly during pivotal religious events such as Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday.

As intelligence agencies continue to monitor the developments, the search for Sarabjit Kaur emphasizes the dilemmas of ensuring safety during these cross-border spiritual excursions. Authorities are advising families and travelers to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities during such expeditions.
