Siddhant Awasthi Steps Down from Tesla Cybertruck Role After Eight Years

Post by : Raina Nasser

Tesla is witnessing a major transition in leadership as Siddhant Awasthi, the programme manager associated with both the Cybertruck and Model 3, has officially stepped down after eight years at the helm of the electric vehicle giant. Awasthi made the announcement via LinkedIn, noting that his departure was a tough choice, though specifics about his future plans remain undisclosed.

His path with Tesla started as an intern, rapidly advancing through various roles. Throughout his time, he played a pivotal role in the production ramp-up of the Model 3, contributed to projects at Giga Shanghai, engaged in new electronics and wireless architecture initiatives, and was instrumental in the highly anticipated rollout of the Cybertruck. Awasthi’s extensive experience covers pivotal areas of Tesla’s operations, indicating his significant impact on the development of some of the company’s standout vehicles.

This resignation comes during a challenging period for Tesla. Recently, the company recalled over 63,000 Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to excessively bright headlights, raising safety concerns. Earlier this year, U.S. regulators also recalled nearly 46,000 Cybertrucks over an unsafe exterior panel located near the windshield.

Additionally, Tesla has been grappling with declining profits in recent quarters. The company recorded a 37% decrease in third-quarter earnings in October, with profits sinking to $1.4 billion from $2.2 billion the previous year, marking a streak of four consecutive quarters of profit decline. Nonetheless, Tesla's sales witnessed a slight uptick, boosted by customers seeking to secure a $7,500 federal EV tax credit before its expiration in October.

As Tesla addresses these operational and financial hurdles, CEO Elon Musk recently gained shareholder support for a performance-based stock initiative potentially valued at $1 trillion, underscoring ongoing investor faith despite various controversies surrounding Musk. Following Awasthi’s announcement, Tesla’s stock climbed over 2% just prior to the market opening on Monday.

With Awasthi’s departure, Tesla experiences a significant shift, having built a legacy of innovation and execution, especially with the transition of the futuristic Cybertruck from concept to reality. This moment is crucial for Tesla, particularly as it navigates recalls, profitability issues, and the ever-changing landscape of the EV market.
