Changi Airport Terminal 3 to Undergo Robotics and Digital Upgrade

Post by : Shakul

Changi Airport is gearing up for a significant upgrade aimed at enhancing its capacity and efficiency as Terminal 3 embarks on a transformative digital and robotic journey. This initiative is crucial for accommodating future growth.

The announcement, made by Jeffrey Siow, highlights that advanced automation will be integrated into various airport functions. Plans for the construction are set to commence by the end of 2026, following a tender release in the latter half of that year.

Among the upgrades, the terminal will feature new technologies including self-service check-in facilities, automated security checks, and robotics for maintenance tasks. These innovations aim to streamline processes and enhance the passenger journey.

Since its inauguration in 2008, Terminal 3 has managed a significant volume of travelers, particularly during peak seasons. The renovations intend to boost its capacity, allowing for a smoother handling of increased passenger traffic.

Changi Airport Group is also considering several infrastructure enhancements. An expansion of early baggage storage facilities by about 65% aims to accommodate the influx of transfer passengers.

improvements to the airport's Skytrain system will see a nearly 30% increase in the number of trains. Additional bus gates will enhance connectivity, while an advanced baggage transfer system is set to offer a backup route between terminals.

Preparing for the next generation of aircraft, many stands will be upgraded to support larger models like the Boeing 777-9, anticipated to enter service imminently.

Moreover, off-airport check-in services are on the agenda, enabling passengers at key hotels to check in and drop off luggage conveniently from the city.

This upgrade forms part of a broader investment worth approximately SGD 3 billion, focusing on enhancements across all four existing terminals. Despite global challenges including rising fuel prices, the airport is experiencing continued growth in both passenger and cargo traffic, solidifying its status as a leading global aviation hub.
