Pioneering AI Review System for Badminton Launched in Malaysia

Post by : Shakul

In a significant leap for sports tech, Malaysia has debuted the world’s first AI-based instant review system for badminton. Officially endorsed by the Badminton World Federation, this advancement stands as a noteworthy evolution in the sport.

Developed by Revealtek Sdn Bhd, a firm dedicated to digital solutions within badminton, the system was showcased at the recent Petronas National Under 18 Badminton Championship in Selangor, where it was utilized in an actual tournament environment.

This innovative system enables players to contest line calls during matches. With cutting-edge AI-enhanced cameras, it assesses the shuttlecock's trajectory and quickly determines its position in relation to the court lines. Results are displayed almost immediately on screens for players, officials, and onlookers alike.

The technology is integral to a broader initiative called the Reveal Digital Badminton Suite, which encompasses various features such as the instant review mechanism, a scoring tool for referees, and live streaming capabilities with real-time score updates for viewers.

One notable benefit of this system is its adaptability and user-friendliness. Unlike conventional systems often employed in international contexts that necessitate complicated infrastructure and hefty investments, this new solution can be rapidly deployed and operates wirelessly. Setup takes less than an hour and accommodates various court types.

The company's leadership indicated that this innovation aims to democratize professional officiating technology for a broader range of tournaments. Historically, such systems have been relegated to high-end competitions, with costs surpassing $100,000 per event.

Introducing this system enhances decision-making during matches and accelerates gameplay by minimizing disputes between players and officials. Furthermore, recorded footage can serve as a valuable resource for post-match analysis and training.

Initial reactions from players, coaches, and officials have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the clarity of decisions and the enhancement of the overall match experience, particularly at the junior level.

This initiative places Malaysia at the forefront of badminton technology, with plans to extend this system's application to international tournaments, national governing bodies, private clubs, and casual matches, thus broadening access to advanced sports tech.
