Sharjah's Supreme Leader Unveils New Independence Square and Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque

Post by : Mara Rahim

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the freshly developed Independence Square on Tuesday morning. This significant event marked the culmination of extensive construction and redevelopment, featuring the new Independence Monument and enhancements to the surrounding areas. The initiative celebrates UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad and commemorates the country's independence on December 2, 1971.

At the heart of the square, the Ruler unveiled a plaque commemorating the 34-meter-tall monument, crowned with a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven emirates of the UAE. This new landmark represents an urban emblem in Sharjah, honoring both historical and national significance. Each side of the monument showcases vital historical narratives linked to the UAE’s path to independence.

One plaque narrates the pivotal morning of December 2, 1971, when the Rulers of the Emirates convened and forged a unified nation named the United Arab Emirates, marking the cessation of British governance. Another plaque notes that British influence in the Emirates lasted 151 years, commencing with the signing of the British treaty on January 8, 1820.

A third plaque chronicles the establishment of Sharjah Civil Air Station on July 22, 1932, detailing how the British military presence was eliminated on December 2, 1971, while the civil station remained operational. The fourth plaque discusses how the British military was based in a manner conflicting with the agreement between Sharjah and Britain.

After the unveiling, His Highness toured the square, discovering the two decorative fountains flanking the monument that contribute aesthetic value to the area. He admired the extensive landscaping, green spaces, pedestrian pathways, and updated lighting that collectively enhance the square's appeal.

During his visit, the Ruler received updates about the restoration of buildings surrounding the square, including improvements to the facades of 24 structures with architectural upgrades and fresh finishes, in alignment with Sharjah's unique identity. Authorities unified 95 commercial signboards to foster a cohesive urban aesthetic, and new lighting systems were introduced to accentuate architectural features at night.

This renovation reflects His Highness’s ambition to enhance urban aesthetics, promote comfortable public spaces, and cultivate an environment beneficial for residents and visitors alike. The initiative contributes to the overall quality of life, strengthens national identity, and embodies values of unity and progress. Infrastructure upgrades included enhancements to roads, walkways, and parking facilities to ensure efficient traffic flow and improved safety. All lighting poles in the square were replaced in this extensive development plan.

The project is an integral part of Sharjah's ongoing urban enhancement strategy, aimed at revitalizing important locations throughout the emirate while preserving its heritage and visual identity.

In tandem with the square's inauguration, the Ruler also unveiled the fully restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque adjacent to the square. Originally established in 1995, the mosque has been renovated in the Fatimid architectural style. His Highness unveiled a plaque marking this reopening and offered prayers within the mosque. He reviewed key renovation works which included raising the height of the two minarets, augmenting the walls, adding an exterior arcade, and upgrading facilities to better serve worshippers.

These enhancements reaffirm Sharjah’s commitment to preserving and expanding its mosques, ensuring they continue to fulfill spiritual and social roles for the community. The Ruler was accompanied by various senior officials during this inauguration, underscoring the significance of such development projects to the emirate’s future.
