In a significant development, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology at the University of Sharjah has kicked off the final testing phase of the Sharjah Sat-2 during an official trip to the Netherlands. This crucial step aims to prepare the CubeSat for its anticipated launch in early 2026.
The delegation’s visit to ISISPACE, a prominent company known for CubeSat and space system integration, was centered on evaluating the concluding stages of assembly, integration, and testing, which are essential prior to any satellite liftoff. Engineers meticulously assessed all satellite functions to ensure they are equipped to operate correctly and safely in the space environment.
The team conducted evaluations of the power systems, safety protocols, and communication devices to guarantee effective command reception and data transmission to the ground. Reviews of the flight software were also performed to validate its full readiness for the forthcoming operations, assuring that the satellite will function seamlessly once in orbit.
Their itinerary included inspections of sophisticated testing facilities, including a thermal vacuum chamber designed to simulate the harshness of outer space, such as extreme temperatures and vacuum. They also reviewed vibration tests aimed at replicating the substantial forces the satellite will encounter during its launch, ensuring its structure’s stability.
Additionally, the team participated in technical discussions and a workshop on international standards for manufacturing and inspection. They meticulously went over quality assurance protocols, documentation practices, and component evaluations to ensure the satellite adheres to all necessary standards for space missions.
Sharjah Sat-2 is set to be equipped with a multispectral imaging camera capable of capturing high-resolution images of Earth with details as fine as five meters. The data acquired from the satellite will enhance Earth observation, support urban planning, aid environmental monitoring, assist in natural resource management, and reinforce disaster response initiatives in Sharjah. The mission aims to bolster sectors such as agriculture and coastal management while fostering local capabilities in space technology.
