Shakib Al Hasan, the former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, has shared his heartfelt intention to wrap up his illustrious international career at home. The 38-year-old all-rounder, widely revered as one of Bangladesh's top cricketers, wishes to play a complete series in Test, One Day International, and T20 formats before officially stepping back from international play.
Formerly a member of parliament for the Awami League under ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Shakib left Bangladesh amidst political upheaval following Hasina’s government’s downfall last year. Despite the turmoil, he confirmed that he is not retiring from all formats and continues to aspire for a fitting farewell in front of his home supporters.
On the podcast “Beard Before Wicket,” Shakib stated, “I am not officially retired from any formats. My objective is to return to Bangladesh, play a complete series in ODI, Test, and T20, and then retire. I wish to conclude my international career by playing a full series in every format.”
Having not represented Bangladesh since his 71st Test against India last year, Shakib stepped away from T20 Internationals. Previously, he requested a farewell Test series in Bangladesh during a series against South Africa, but the interim government could not ensure his security due to his political background.
Currently, Shakib is participating in various global T20 leagues, maintaining his fitness and hoping to return to national duty. “I am optimistic. That’s why I’m engaging in T20 leagues. I believe it will come to fruition,” he expressed, showcasing his determination to finish his career where his remarkable journey began.
Fans of Bangladesh cricket are eagerly anticipating Shakib Al Hasan's return, yearning for the opportunity to witness their hero bid farewell on their home turf. His legacy, characterized by a decade of extraordinary performances and leadership, serves as an inspiration to aspiring cricketers throughout Bangladesh.
This poignant revelation underscores Shakib’s deep connection with Bangladeshi cricket and his goal to end a monumental career with grace, allowing fans to celebrate one last chapter of his invaluable contributions to the national squad.
