Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first woman and first Emirati to lead the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) for the 2026–2029 term. Her election, which gained the support of over 160 nations, highlights the global confidence in her leadership and the UAE’s rising profile in tourism and international diplomacy.
This announcement was made during the 26th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from November 7 to 11, where a UAE delegation, led by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, played an active role.
The successful campaign for her leadership followed a rigorous nomination and voting process, emphasizing her credentials and global recognition. This achievement underlines the UAE’s continuous efforts in empowering women and promoting Emirati talent on the world stage.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri described this election as a pivotal moment, not only for the UAE but also for the Arab region and the global tourism industry. He pointed out the UAE’s success in sustainable tourism initiatives, advanced infrastructure, and rich cultural diversity, which have solidified the nation as a leading global tourism hub. He added that Emirati airlines play a crucial role in enhancing connections between East and West, facilitating travel, trade, and cultural exchanges.
In her address to the General Assembly, Al Nowais stressed that tourism transcends mere economics, serving as a bridge for human connection, peace, and sustainable development. She advocated for partnerships, innovation, and community-centered tourism strategies aimed at fostering growth and inclusivity, particularly for women, youth, and local communities.
Her vision for the UNWTO seeks to turn challenges into opportunities, fortifying national economies while enhancing global tourism sustainability. Al Nowais aims to increase capacity building, knowledge sharing, and financial aid for developing nations to ensure that tourism remains a significant conduit for inclusive and sustainable growth around the globe.
Discussions at the 26th UNWTO General Assembly also encompassed crucial topics such as digital transformation, tourism competitiveness, skill development, and sustainable tourism models, which safeguard the environment while stimulating economic progress. These discussions highlight the ongoing evolution of the sector, particularly in the post-pandemic landscape where resilience and diversification are crucial.
With Shaikha Al Nowais at the forefront, the UNWTO is poised to embark on a new chapter of inclusive, innovative, and sustainable global tourism leadership, echoing both the UAE’s strategic vision and the international community’s trust in her abilities to steer the sector forward.
