Severe Flooding in Sri Lanka Claims 56 Lives Amidst Landslides and School Closures

Colombo: Sri Lanka is grappling with a significant weather crisis as relentless floods and landslides wreak havoc across several districts, with the death toll now at 56 and over 600 homes severely impacted, officials reported on Friday.

Since last week, the island has faced intense weather challenges, but conditions deteriorated dramatically on Thursday when continuous heavy rainfall triggered both floods and landslides in numerous regions. Major routes, homes, and agricultural land have all been inundated, resulting in extensive disruption.

Crisis in the Central Hill Country

The central highland areas of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, famous for their tea plantations, have been severely affected.
The landslides in these districts, situated nearly 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Colombo, resulted in the death of over 25 individuals.

According to reports from the country’s disaster management center, 21 individuals are reported missing, while 14 others sustained injuries due to landslides and collapsing slopes.

Fatalities from landslides have also emerged in various regions of Sri Lanka as the heavy rainfall continues.

Closure of State Offices and Educational Institutions

In light of escalating weather threats, the government has declared that all government offices and schools will remain closed, effective Friday, to prioritize public safety.

Authorities reported that reservoirs and rivers have overflowed, leading to the shutdown of several primary routes. Rising water levels have obstructed access with debris such as mud, rocks, and fallen trees.

Interruptions to Transportation Services

Train services for passengers were suspended in various locations due to flooded tracks, mudslides, and debris making travel hazardous. Several connecting roads have also been closed as a result of landslides and flooding.

Local TV broadcasts showcased dramatic scenes of Sri Lanka’s armed forces working to save residents trapped in perilous situations.
An air force helicopter was seen rescuing a trio from a rooftop engulfed by rising floodwaters.

Footage also captured the moment a car was swept away by fierce currents in the eastern town of Ampara, tragically resulting in three casualties.

Sri Lanka Confronts Extreme Weather Challenges

The continuous flooding and landslide events in Sri Lanka have intensified concerns over the nation’s susceptibility to climate-induced disasters. Meteorological experts indicate that further heavy rainfall is anticipated in the following days, urging residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution.
