Pakistan Experiences 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake, The Fifth in Recent Weeks

Post by : Raina Nasser

In the early hours of Tuesday, Pakistan was rocked by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at 1:21 am IST, with its epicenter positioned at a latitude of 25.48 degrees North and longitude of 66.69 degrees East. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, heightening the chances of significant ground shaking and potential damage.

This marks the fifth earthquake to hit Pakistan within the last month, underlining the nation's vulnerability to seismic threats. Just on December 5, a 3.6-magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 40 kilometers, while a stronger magnitude of 4.3 was felt earlier on November 25 at a depth of 120 kilometers. A notable 5.2-magnitude earthquake was also documented on November 21, followed by a 3.9 quake on November 20 at a shallow depth.

Shallow earthquakes can lead to more severe impacts as seismic waves travel less distance to reach the surface, resulting in stronger vibrations. Regions such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to major fault lines. Even areas like Punjab and Sindh are at risk, sitting along the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate.

Situated at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, Pakistan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions. Experts advise residents in these predisposed areas to stay vigilant for further aftershocks and to implement safety measures.

The recent quake underscores the critical importance of earthquake preparedness, with increasing seismic activity prompting authorities and local communities to stay alert to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety.
