The Strategic Development Fund (SDF), a pivotal investment body owned by the EDGE Group in Abu Dhabi, has officially partnered with Machina Labs, a frontrunner in AI-driven manufacturing from the US. This partnership was solidified during discussions held at the Dubai Airshow 2025, aiming to establish a robust framework for a joint venture focused on advanced metal production using Machina Labs' innovative software-defined factory approach.
In line with this agreement, SDF has initiated an initial funding round, with potential additional investments escalating to AED125 million. This financial support will facilitate the exploration of how Machina Labs' cutting-edge manufacturing technology can be integrated and scaled across the UAE and neighboring regions. Critical sectors such as aerospace, defense, and mobility will be assessed for their need for advanced production techniques.
Hamad Al Marar, CEO and Managing Director of EDGE Group, articulated that this collaboration embodies the UAE's vision of bolstering industrial capabilities. Collaborating with pioneering manufacturing firms aligns with EDGE's growth strategies while contributing to the nation’s goals for technological leadership.
Echoing this sentiment, Abdulla Naser Al Jaabari, SDF’s Managing Director and CEO, noted that the partnership resonates with SDF's investment strategy, which not only backs promising startups but also forges alliances that facilitate the infusion of high-value technologies into the UAE landscape. He emphasized the innovative potential of the partnership with Machina Labs in catering to various critical needs within SDF’s portfolio and the larger EDGE ecosystem.
Machina Labs will leverage its core technology, the RoboCraftsman™ platform, which integrates forming, scanning, trimming, drilling, and welding processes into a singular advanced robotic manufacturing cell. A significant advantage of this mechanism is the elimination of traditional tooling, which allows for expedited production, enhanced design versatility, and scalable complex metal assembly manufacturing.
Edward Mehr, Co-Founder and CEO of Machina Labs, expressed confidence in the UAE's robust innovation commitment and EDGE Group's progressive outlook, deeming the region ideal for the introduction of such avant-garde technologies. Once the partnership is fully operational, it will aid Machina Labs in swiftly augmenting its defence and strategic manufacturing capabilities.
The factory model devised by Machina Labs is engineered for rapid deployment—full production capabilities can be established in mere weeks rather than years. This feature has the potential to significantly reinforce the UAE's advanced manufacturing infrastructure and enhance supply chain robustness.
SDF is set to collaborate closely with its partners to analyze the local implementation of these technologies and assess the beneficial impacts they could bring to the UAE's expanding industrial sphere.
