SAP Unveils EU AI Cloud to Enhance Safe AI Practices Across Europe

Post by : Mara Rahim

SAP has announced a strategic initiative called EU AI Cloud, consolidating its previous efforts towards digital sovereignty into a user-friendly framework. This new offering aims to empower organisations across Europe with greater options, improved control, and increased assurance in their use of AI and cloud technologies. The initiative ensures that businesses can confidently operate without the risk of data being transferred out of Europe or violating EU legislation.

The EU AI Cloud allows for various system management approaches. Some organisations may opt to leverage SAP's proprietary data centres, while others may choose to partner with reputable European cloud providers. Additionally, for firms prioritising data localization, on-premises solutions within their own facilities are fully supported. SAP has crafted the EU AI Cloud to meet these diverse requirements, maintaining strict compliance with EU data protection directives.

To address the rising demand for sophisticated yet secure AI solutions within Europe, SAP has partnered with Cohere to roll out innovative agent-style and multimodal AI tools available via Cohere North, integrated within the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). This provision caters to industries bound by stringent data residency regulations.

Through this collaboration, SAP and Cohere aspire to enhance business intelligence, refine decision-making processes, and streamline complex operations without compromising security or operational efficacy. Cohere has emphasized their commitment to ensuring advanced AI access for entities that cannot move their data outside of Europe. Such terms as EU sovereignty, data protection, AI compliance, cloud security, and SAP BTP are proving increasingly vital for organisational leaders.

The development of the EU AI Cloud is a collaborative effort, engaging multiple partners from both Europe and the global landscape. AI models and solutions from companies like Cohere, Mistral AI, and OpenAI are seamlessly integrated with SAP BTP, enabling clients a straightforward approach to creating, employing, and expanding AI applications.

Access to these partner solutions is available through SaaS, PaaS, or IaaS models, allowing organisations to execute them on SAP infrastructure or through accredited European cloud providers. This level of flexibility equips both private enterprises and public sector entities with contemporary AI tools while adhering to Europe’s rigorous safety, privacy, and sovereignty regulations.

The EU AI Cloud functions through SAP's Sovereign Cloud, which grants organisations the ability to dictate the extent of control they maintain across their technology stack. AI models are executed on SAP's cloud infrastructure situated in European data centres, ensuring operations remain distinct from significant US cloud providers and reinforcing compliance with EU regulations.

SAP provides various deployment alternatives:

1. An option that utilises SAP’s own IaaS based on open-source technologies, ensuring all data remains within the EU to help organisations adhere to local privacy laws.

2. A model where SAP manages the infrastructure located in a site chosen by the customer, optimising control over data and operational processes.

3. For clients who still prefer using international cloud providers for specific services, SAP offers supplementary sovereignty features tailored to local needs.

4. A dedicated cloud solution in Germany tailored for the public sector, compliant with strict regional regulations to assist government institutions in a secure digital transformation.

The EU AI Cloud equips European organisations with expanded choices, enhanced control, and greater confidence when employing AI. Backed by numerous deployment options, robust data protection, and strategic partnerships, SAP provides a framework through which both businesses and public entities can leverage advanced AI technologies without compromising their essential safeguards.
