Diplomatic tensions between Russia and Poland escalated on Thursday as Moscow ordered Poland to close its consulate in the Siberian city of Irkutsk. The move comes in retaliation for Warsaw’s decision to shut the last Russian consulate in Poland following a railway explosion earlier this month.
Poland had blamed the blast on two Ukrainians working for Russian interests. The explosion occurred on the Warsaw-Lublin railway line that connects Poland’s capital to the Ukrainian border. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as an “unprecedented act of sabotage.” Poland’s intelligence services pointed to Russian involvement, although Moscow has denied any role.
In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry condemned Warsaw’s closure of the Gdansk consulate, calling it an “openly hostile, unjustified step by the Polish leadership.” Moscow announced that the Irkutsk consulate would be closed starting December 30, emphasizing that any attacks on Russia would trigger an “adequate, painful response.”
Polish authorities, however, rejected Russia’s reasoning. Maciej Wewior, a spokesman for Poland’s Foreign Ministry, said, “We accepted Russia’s decision to withdraw consent, although we believe there were no grounds for it because it is not Poland that is organising acts of terror in Russia.”
The diplomatic tit-for-tat underscores the growing strain between the two countries amid heightened European security concerns and tensions over regional conflicts. While both nations maintain official channels, the closure of consulates could limit diplomatic engagement and consular services for citizens on both sides.
The situation also highlights the broader geopolitical climate in Europe, where accusations of espionage and sabotage are fueling mistrust. Analysts warn that continued escalation could further complicate Poland-Russia relations and impact regional stability.
As December 30 approaches, the international community will be watching closely to see how both countries manage the dispute and whether dialogue can prevent further deterioration in ties.
