Ahead of President Vladimir Putin's anticipated visit to New Delhi in December for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, Russia has put forth a significant defense initiative for India. This will mark Putin's first official visit to India since December 2021 and could represent a pivotal moment in the historic defense ties between the two nations.
Complete Access to Su-57 Technology
Officials from the Russian defense sector have revealed that they are prepared to grant India unrestricted access to the technology of the Su-57, an advanced fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. This access encompasses essential components such as engines, sensor technology, stealth materials, control systems, and other vital elements necessary for the design and assembly of contemporary fighter jets.
Initially, Russia will provide aircraft assembled in its own facilities, with plans to progressively relocate production to Indian soil. This strategy ensures that India can acquire knowledge, refine its capabilities, and eventually fabricate its own advanced aircraft—something that has been unmatched in international defense agreements.
Russia is also prepared to accommodate India's requests for production rights, collaboration in training, and enhanced integration of Indian-manufactured weaponry into these aircraft.
Potential Inclusion of the Su-75 Checkmate
Speculation is rife that Russia might also offer the new Su-75 Checkmate, a single-engine stealth fighter, to India. This aircraft is expected to fulfill a role in light to medium combat sectors and could see local production if an agreement is finalized.
Experts suggest that local production of the Su-75 could help India meet its future air power essentials at a more manageable cost while also opening doors for significant export revenues, similar to the achievements witnessed with the BrahMos missile venture.
Importantly, the Su-75 is designed to complement, rather than compete with, India's twin-engine AMCA program, ensuring that both aircraft fulfill distinct operational roles to bolster the Air Force.
Motivations Behind Russia's Offer
Russian officials have highlighted India's steadfast partnership spanning several decades. Despite challenges faced by India amid international scrutiny and military pressures, Russia has consistently supported India's defense needs. Moscow seeks to further solidify this partnership by assisting India in enhancing its autonomous fighter jet production capabilities.
Moreover, Russian representatives have indicated that they are open to accommodating any technological requests from New Delhi, including advancements in radar systems, artificial intelligence, stealth technology, and next-gen air combat armaments.
Preparation for the Upcoming Diplomatic Visit
As President Putin's visit approaches, numerous pivotal announcements regarding defense collaborations are expected. Diplomatic groundwork is already underway, with recent meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nikolai Patrushev, a senior Russian security figure, focusing on strengthening cooperation—particularly in maritime capabilities and strategic defense initiatives.
The discussions also delved into preparations for the forthcoming summit, scheduled for early December. This visit aims to underscore the advancement of the India-Russia defense partnership, highlighting modernization efforts in defense production, enhancing strategic collaboration, and addressing evolving regional security concerns.
