Marco Rubio Confirms Mojtaba Khamenei's Active Role in Iran

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, is alive and seems to be taking a more prominent role in the nation's governance.

During his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, Rubio noted that Khamenei appears to be more engaged in shaping Iran's policies. These comments occur amidst heightened tensions between the US and Iran, particularly regarding the standstill in negotiations concerning Tehran’s nuclear activities.

"Evidence suggests he is becoming more involved at various levels," Rubio remarked to committee members.

Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei sustained injuries on February 28 during a joint military operation conducted by the US and Israel, which allegedly resulted in his father, Ali Khamenei's death.

Rubio expressed optimism that a diplomatic resolution with Iran is still achievable but emphasized that Tehran must undertake considerable actions concerning its nuclear plans before any considerations for sanctions relief.

He stated that Iran should reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil and gas transportation, and cease its attacks on commercial ships in the area. Rubio indicated that the US would play a role in clearing any mines placed in the strait, provided Iran guarantees safe passage for vessels.

"They must clearly announce that the straits are open and that they will refrain from targeting ships," Rubio added.

The Secretary of State further emphasized that any future negotiation must require Iran to accept stringent and long-term limitations on its uranium enrichment program or cease enrichment entirely.

Rubio pointed out that the sanctions levied against Iran are directly connected to its enriched uranium reserves, impacting its broader nuclear initiatives. He reiterated that sanction relief is contingent on Tehran’s commitment to drastically reduce its nuclear activities.

These statements come as diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran remain stalled, while the ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8 continues to experience mounting pressure.
