Sudan's RSF Initiates 3-Month Humanitarian Ceasefire Amidst Peace Efforts

Post by : Raina Nasser

The leader of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, declared a three-month humanitarian ceasefire on Monday, influenced by appeals from US President Donald Trump to halt the devastating war. This announcement aligns with ongoing international initiatives spearheaded by the US, UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia—collectively known as the Quad—aimed at facilitating peace talks and establishing a temporary truce.

In his public address, General Dagalo stated that the ceasefire would take effect immediately and last for three months, urging the Quad nations to persuade Sudan's army to engage in the peace process. This announcement came as a surprise, particularly after recent RSF drone strikes on army positions.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 over disputes regarding the integration of the RSF into the regular army, has resulted in widespread devastation, claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians, and sparked famine. The RSF has been accused of severe violence and ethnic attacks, especially after taking control of the Darfur region, including capturing El Fasher city in late October. Both General Dagalo and Sudan's army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, face US sanctions.

General al-Burhan has dismissed the Quad's peace initiative, branding it as favoring the RSF. He asserted that the RSF rebels have no future role in Sudan or in any potential resolution. The ongoing strife has further polarized the nation and escalated the humanitarian crisis.

The RSF's ceasefire announcement represents a potential move towards de-escalating violence and creating opportunities for dialogue. Nevertheless, considering the recent hostilities and the entrenched mistrust between the conflicting parties, the success of this ceasefire hinges on the cooperation of all involved. The world remains vigilant, yearning for a sustainable peace in Sudan.
