A devastating incident occurred off Malaysia's coast as a vessel carrying hundreds of migrants capsized close to Langkawi. Authorities have confirmed the recovery of seven bodies, with 13 individuals saved amidst ongoing search operations in the area.
Malaysian maritime officials reported that the boat set sail from Buthidaung in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and was carrying around 300 migrants, predominantly Rohingya Muslims fleeing long-standing persecution. Initial investigations indicate that as the boat neared Malaysia, it fractured into three smaller crafts. One vessel sank near Tarutao Island in southern Thailand, prompting passengers to drift into Malaysian waters.
The precise timing and exact location of the disaster remain uncertain, and the fate of the remaining two boats is still undetermined.
Local reports state that the Malaysian police confirmed that several of the rescued individuals are Rohingya refugees. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) revealed that five victims were found on Sunday, and three additional survivors were rescued from the sea. The search area has been extended, with efforts persisting into Monday.
Authorities are increasingly alarmed by the rising number of cross-border syndicates that exploit desperate migrants and refugees, facilitating perilous sea journeys. These treacherous voyages, often executed in overcrowded and unsafe vessels, have led to numerous deaths in recent years.
The UN refugee agency is advocating for stronger rescue initiatives and collaboration among regional governments to prevent further tragedies. According to UNHCR, approximately 5,200 Rohingya refugees attempted risky maritime journeys this year alone, and close to 600 individuals are reported missing or dead.
In January, Malaysian authorities refused entry to two boats carrying nearly 300 Rohingya refugees trying to enter the nation illegally. Malaysia, despite its largely Malay Muslim demographic, faces challenges in balancing humanitarian obligations with concerns regarding mass migration. Currently, the country is home to about 117,670 Rohingya refugees, constituting approximately 59% of its total refugee populace.
This latest incident underscores the dire humanitarian plight of the Rohingya and emphasizes the need for systematic regional interventions to ensure safer migration avenues and avert future tragedies.
