Mumbai Doctor Cautions Against Early Morning Runs Amid Air Pollution

Post by : Saif Nasser

While running is a favored activity for fitness, health practitioners caution that it may be detrimental in areas with heavy air pollution. Dr. Ramkishan Nag, a consultant in surgical oncology at HCG Cancer Centre in Borivali, highlights that early morning jogging, particularly in colder months, subjects the lungs to harmful toxins.

Dr. Nag points out that factors like smog, car emissions, and cool, stagnant air accumulate pollutants close to the ground, making morning hours particularly unsafe for joggers. “Air Quality Index (AQI) readings between 200 and 400 have alarmingly become routine across numerous Indian cities. A simple 30-minute session outdoors can introduce lungs to pollutive air equivalent to smoking several cigarettes,” he stated.

Aerobic activities such as jogging heighten the body's oxygen needs. Deeper and quicker breaths pull in more particles like nitrogen dioxide and ozone into the lungs. Dr. Nag elaborated that such conditions can provoke inflammation, diminish lung capacity, and aggravate issues like asthma or chronic bronchitis. Persistent exposure might elevate the chances of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart issues.

To mitigate risks, runners must modify their practices according to air quality levels. Activities should be curtailed if the AQI surpasses 200. Opting for indoor options like treadmills, fitness centers, or at-home workouts is recommended for safety. If unavoidable, wearing an N95 mask, avoiding thoroughfares, and seeking greener locales can help reduce harmful exposure.

Utilizing technology is beneficial as well. Apps offering real-time AQI data enable runners to choose safer exercise times. Dr. Nag notes that pollution levels typically decrease during late morning and early evening compared to the colder dawn hours.

Dr. Nag stressed the necessity of long-term interventions, advocating for enhanced green spaces, improved public transportation, and stricter regulations on emissions. He emphasized, “Running is a vital part of maintaining health, but it should enhance lung function, not compromise it. Through mindfulness and preparation, fitness lovers can safeguard their health even in polluted urban settings.”
