Rick Fox Enters Politics in the Bahamas to Drive Change

Post by : Raina Nasser

A former NBA star and three-time champion revealed on Monday his intention to contest for a position in the Bahamas’ House of Assembly in the forthcoming election, scheduled to occur by October at the latest. The ex-athlete took to social media to outline his commitment to leadership characterized by transparency, integrity, and dedication to national excellence.

Rick Fox, who was born in Canada to a Bahamian father and Canadian mother, enjoyed a successful 14-season career in the NBA as a forward, primarily with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. He celebrated three NBA championship wins with the Lakers from 2000 to 2002 before retiring in 2004.

The Bahamas operates under a parliamentary system. Fox is set to compete for one of the 39 constituencies, although he has not disclosed his intended area of representation. The election date will be established by the current Prime Minister, Philip Davis, and must occur within five years of the last election held in 2021.

Earlier this month, he also announced the formation of a new political party named the Good Neighbors Party, which aims to enhance Caribbean regional integration. His political focus prioritizes unity and development for the region.

Beyond basketball, Fox has found success in acting, appearing in popular series and films such as "Ugly Betty," "Greenleaf," and "One Tree Hill." While he predominantly resides in Los Angeles, he possesses a home in the Bahamas and was designated the country’s ambassador at large for sports in 2022.

Through this new political endeavor, the former NBA star aspires to motivate change and introduce a renewed vision for the Bahamas, advocating for security, empowerment, and national pride among all Bahamians.
