Madhuri Dixit makes an impactful return to streaming with Mrs Deshpande, a Hindi web series that marks her first major role since The Fame Game (2022). Now available on JioHotstar, this crime thriller places the iconic actress in a darker character than ever before, quickly capturing the attention of online viewers.
In this series, she portrays Seema Deshpande, a calm former restaurateur concealing a tragic past. Although Seema has been convicted of a single murder, she is the perpetrator behind eight deaths in total. While serving her time by managing the prison kitchen and practicing yoga, her former identity is challenged when a wave of murders echoes her previous crimes.
As the narrative unfolds, Mumbai is rocked by new killings that replicate Seema’s signature methods. In a bold move, Commissioner Arun seeks Seema's help to catch the new killer, which sets off a complicated relationship with Inspector Tejas, who is skeptical of her true intentions.
While Arun takes an unusually empathetic approach to Seema, viewing her as an asset rather than a criminal, Tejas remains wary and suspects a deeper strategy at play. This dynamic of psychological tension drives the storyline forward.
Inspired by the acclaimed French series La Mante, Mrs Deshpande is under the direction of Nagesh Kukunoor, who co-wrote the series alongside Rohit Banawlikar. The show offers a six-episode journey filled with unexpected turns, emotional intricacies, and moral dilemmas.
As the investigation progresses, personal stakes rise for Tejas, impacting his relationships with his wife and friends. This personal dimension adds richness to the narrative, making it more than just a typical crime saga.
Madhuri Dixit’s compelling performance is undoubtedly the highlight, blending her famed elegance with the coldness of her character. Despite some gaps in exploring Seema's psychological layers, Dixit's screen presence keeps audiences engaged.
Siddharth Chandekar stands out as Inspector Tejas, bringing a depth of character and tension, particularly in the series’ opening episodes. The supporting cast focuses primarily on advancing the central conflict, allowing the main rivalry to shine.
At its heart, Mrs Deshpande contemplates how love can help erase memories, while trauma enforces their permanence. The series builds anticipation around Seema’s next actions, accentuating its suspenseful allure.
Overall, Mrs Deshpande is a polished, thrill-packed web series that takes advantage of Madhuri Dixit’s striking performance and familiar yet captivating serial killer narrative, marking an essential addition to India’s OTT crime landscape.
