On Monday, the award-winning actress Renee Zellweger—famous for her role as Bridget Jones in the beloved film series—unveiled a statue in Leicester Square, commemorating 25 years since the debut of Bridget Jones’s Diary. The occasion highlighted the significant cultural impact of both the character and the films.
During the ceremony, Zellweger expressed her amazement, stating, "It’s pretty crazy. It’s kind of strange. It’s not something that you... ever expect... it’s quite a surprise."
The statue captures Bridget Jones with her hair pulled back in a mini skirt, pen and diary in hand—an instantly recognized figure to fans. Zellweger remarked on the resemblance: "I mean, she’s adorable... she’s really cute. Looks like Bridget to me."
Bridget Jones, conceived by author Helen Fielding over thirty years ago via a column depicting her romantic escapades and personal challenges, led to the publication of Bridget Jones's Diary in 1996, which became a bestseller quickly. This was followed by three more books that delved deeper into Bridget’s romantic endeavors and career.
The film adaptation of Bridget Jones’s Diary, released in 2001, starred Zellweger alongside Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, achieving instant classic status. The story continued with Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004), Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016), and the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025).
Fielding shared her thoughts on the character’s ongoing relevance, mentioning, "My daughter's generation now like Bridget, and that means a huge amount to me because it hardly ever happens. So I feel very, very lucky, and yeah, I’m proud of Bridget."
The statue is incorporated into the Scenes in the Square trail, which honors iconic film characters with life-sized depictions in Leicester Square—renowned as a hotspot for film premieres and cinematic activities. This trail, initiated in 2020, also features iconic characters like Laurel and Hardy and Batman.
The project aims to celebrate characters that have significantly influenced popular culture and inspired generations of film enthusiasts. The unveiling of Bridget Jones not only marks her 25-year legacy but also underscores the character’s continued charm for both long-time fans and new audiences.
Bridget Jones has solidified her status as one of the most relatable figures in modern pop culture. Her humorous and honest storytelling, paired with her memorable love and career challenges, has resonated with viewers for decades. The statue stands as a tribute to her enduring legacy, honoring Fielding’s innovation, Zellweger’s memorable portrayal, and the films that vividly brought Bridget to the screen.
