Canadian manufacturers of kitchen cabinets are experiencing a wave of relief following the U.S. government's decision to delay a forthcoming tariff increase. The 50% tariff on cabinets and vanities, initially scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2026, has now been pushed back to 2027.
James McKenna, the proprietor of Glenwood Kitchen in Shediac, New Brunswick, noted the timing of the announcement was fortuitous. “We’ve managed with the current 25% tariff, but a jump to 50% would have been insurmountable,” McKenna stated. “We were already seeing a downturn in orders, and the additional tariff would have severely impacted our business in the U.S.”
This delay enables firms like Glenwood Kitchen to maintain a foothold with their American clients while ensuring operational stability. Nevertheless, McKenna highlighted the critical need for market diversification. His business is actively broadening its sales efforts across Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Bermuda, and even seeking opportunities in Mexico with consultancy support. “We can no longer rely solely on the U.S. market,” he remarked.
While many in the industry celebrate this development, experts warn that unpredictability persists. Ron Marcolin, a divisional vice-president at Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, pointed out that while the tariff delay is promising, businesses should continue to seek new markets. “U.S. policies can shift rapidly, and it is vital for manufacturers to probe additional regions, including Europe via Atlantic Canada ports, for potential export growth,” he advised.
Despite the challenges posed by tariffs, McKenna remains positive about the U.S. market. “Our products have a strong following in New England, and we see considerable potential for growth once the tariffs are fully lifted,” he indicated.
The U.S. has likewise delayed a smaller tariff hike on upholstered wooden furniture, moving a planned increase from 25% to 30% until 2027. These actions illuminate the ongoing complexities Canadian exporters encounter with U.S. trade regulations and underscore the necessity for strategic planning and market diversification.
