In an era before streaming and podcasts, audiences were mesmerized by the suspenseful tales broadcast through radios. Recently, a rarely heard radio play by Tennessee Williams, crafted during his college days, has emerged, unveiling the imaginative roots of one of America’s renowned playwrights.
Entitled “The Strangers,” this gothic narrative was written by Williams, then called Tom Williams, while attending the University of Iowa in the late 1930s. Now featured in The Strand Magazine, the play demonstrates his early intrigue with isolation, fear, and the tenuous boundaries between reality and fantasy. The magazine is known for reviving lesser-known works from literary legends like Hemingway, Faulkner, and Steinbeck.
Set against the backdrop of a New England manor overlooking the Atlantic, “The Strangers” immerses its audience in a realm filled with stormy nights and shadowy figures. The plot follows Mr. and Mrs. Brighton as they are invisible beings lurking just beyond the grasp of human perception. Initial lines of the play reflect Williams’ exploration of human vulnerability: “We members of the human species are equipped with only five senses. Or six at the very most… what we know of them is very, very slight.”
Williams’ interest in horror and the uncanny stemmed from both the popular radio trends of the 1930s and personal experiences. Scholars note that during this time, Williams faced the mental health challenges of his sister Rose, an experience that greatly influenced the delicate and nuanced characters of his later works, such as The Glass Menagerie.
What began as a creative writing exercise, these early radio endeavors honed Williams' skills in storytelling, dialogue, and dramatic tension, laying the groundwork for the masterpieces that characterized his career. “The Strangers” provides a rare window into the early development of a writer whose themes of fear, madness, and human fragility endure across generations.
