Illustrating that valor knows no boundaries, a young boy from Punjab has become an embodiment of courage amid one of the most delicate phases along the India–Pakistan frontier. Shravan Singh, hailing from Chak Taran Wali village in Ferozepur district, has been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in recognition of his dedicated assistance to Indian Army soldiers during Operation Sindoor.
As military tensions flared in May, prompting troop deployments in forward areas close to his home, the atmosphere was laden with fear and uncertainty. Civilians were urged to act carefully as the risk of conflict increased. Yet, in the midst of this strife, young Shravan, a mere student, chose compassion over fear.
With soldiers stationed nearby, Shravan took it upon himself to aid them daily in simple but significant ways. He would carry milk, tea, buttermilk, water, and ice under the relentless summer sun, ensuring the troops received essential comforts while fulfilling their duties. His consistent, heartfelt gestures displayed profound empathy and a remarkable sense of duty.
Reflecting on those moments, Shravan later shared that he never anticipated his actions would bring him national acclaim. He viewed the arrival of the soldiers as an opportunity to assist in any capacity he could, stating that the recognition was beyond his wildest dreams.
Operation Sindoor commenced on May 7, following a grievous terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that resulted in 26 casualties. In retaliation, India executed synchronized strikes targeting terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In response, Pakistan initiated drone and missile attacks, which were effectively countered, leading to tactical strikes by Indian forces at select military air bases. A mutual agreement to cease further military actions was reached on May 10.
During this tumultuous period, Shravan remained steadfast in his support, despite the associated risks. His deeds garnered widespread admiration, with leaders and citizens alike praising his unwavering spirit and dedication at such a tender age.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar honors children across seven categories, including bravery, social service, innovation, sports, environment, science and technology, and cultural arts. For his fearless actions amid perilous circumstances, Shravan was selected in the bravery category.
His remarkable journey serves as a profound reminder that patriotism transcends age and attire, emphasizing the significance of stepping up to help when it is most needed.
