Ranvir Shorey Attributes Failure of Chandni Chowk To China to Directorial Shortcomings

Post by : Mina Rahman

The action-comedy Chandni Chowk To China, directed by Nikkhil Advani and featuring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone, did not perform well commercially. In a recent interview, actor Ranvir Shorey held the film's director and producer accountable for its lackluster box office results.

Ranvir pointed out that, although the script had potential, the execution fell short. “When a script shows promise but the resulting film doesn’t live up to that, the responsibility ultimately rests with the director and producer,” he stated.

In a 2021 discussion, Nikkhil Advani also reflected on the film's shortcomings, stating, “There were multiple directions being taken. While Akshay and I wanted to lead the film in one way, Ramesh Sippy had a contrasting vision, and Rohan Sippy and Sridhar Raghavan pulled it in yet another direction. After a while, I lost hope.”

Released in 2009, Chandni Chowk To China featured Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone along with Mithun Chakraborty, Gordon Liu, and Ranvir Shorey. The film told the story of Sidhu, a humble cook from Delhi, who is mistakenly identified as a reincarnated Chinese martial artist. Despite receiving mixed reviews, it grossed ₹53.45 crore against a budget of ₹65 crore.
