The highly anticipated film Varanasi by SS Rajamouli was showcased at an elaborate event in Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Among the attendees were Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Although the announcement sparked considerable enthusiasm, one major detail captured fans' attention—the notable absence of actor names from the initial poster.
The three-minute video reveal of the film concludes with the tagline “SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi,” credited to writer V. Vijayendra Prasad, music composer MM Keeravani, and vital technical staff. However, crucially, the names of the lead actors are missing from both the poster and title card.
This exclusion has generated considerable buzz online, with many questioning the rationale behind omitting the actors' names. Longtime supporters of Rajamouli quickly clarified that this is part of a deliberate artistic approach he's maintained since Baahubali, emphasizing that the storytelling, characters, and world-building should take precedence over star power. Introductions of actors in his films are typically left unnamed to enhance audience immersion, with names included only in the end credits.
Additionally, many commentators noted that Rajamouli himself is perhaps the most significant global brand associated with this project, as audiences worldwide tend to recognize his work more through his name rather than the cast. Supporters highlighted that the filmmaker’s vision and narrative prowess have become the leading attractions, often overshadowing even notable stars.
The title reveal also provided initial glimpses of the film's characters.
Mahesh Babu is shown as Rudhra, depicted riding a bull down Varanasi’s streets.
Priyanka Chopra portrays Mandakini, an enigmatic, gun-toting figure in a saree.
Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Kumbha, the antagonist seen in a wheelchair.
With little information available about the characters, intrigue surrounding the film’s expansive, multi-era narrative that reportedly spans across continents and centuries continues to grow. Varanasi is currently in production, set for a global release on Sankranthi 2027.
