A fresh controversy has erupted around international pageantry after several Miss Universe contestants staged a walkout at an event in Thailand. Reports say the incident began when Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, declined to participate in a promotional group photo for Thailand, prompting a heated exchange with Nawat Itsaragrisil — the president of Miss Grand International who also collaborates with Miss Universe. Video of the confrontation circulated widely online and provoked global reaction.
That episode has brought renewed attention to Indian model Rachel Gupta. Gupta became the first Indian winner of the Miss Grand International title in October 2024 but returned the crown in May 2025, alleging mistreatment during her reign. She has accused the organisation of body‑shaming, restricting her access to adequate food, and lodging her in substandard conditions. The Miss Grand International body has rejected her claims, stating she was removed for failing to fulfil her responsibilities.
Following the recent walkout and the footage involving Nawat, Gupta posted on Instagram the message, "Karma is a queen." Observers have treated the post as an implicit comment on the Thailand incident, and it attracted a stream of supportive replies, including messages from Mexican users affirming their belief in her statements.
Earlier, Gupta shared another social update from a beach setting captioned "Free," which followers interpreted as a sign of relief and a claim of vindication as public attention revisits her account of events.
In a detailed YouTube video titled "The Truth about Miss Grand International," Gupta described her tenure: confined accommodations for extended periods, limited food access, repeated pressure to control her weight, and feelings of isolation and stress. Her account sparked discussion across social platforms.
Miss Grand International has issued denials and provided its own version of events, but Gupta's testimony has nonetheless drawn widespread online support from fans in India and elsewhere.
Analysts and commentators say the Miss Universe walkout has reopened scrutiny of how pageant organisations manage titleholders and respond to disputes. For many observers, Gupta's earlier allegations now form part of a broader debate about governance and contestant welfare in international pageantry.
